Design Research Methodology
Proposal
The first class began with an introduction session with our new lecturers, Dr. Yati and Dr. Jinchi. As always, we went through the module information booklet altogether as a class. We had our assignments overview session and was informed to start forming ideas for our first research proposal assignments.
Week 2 | Sep 6, 2019
Week 3 | Sep 13, 2019
Week 4 | Sep 20, 2019
Class was cancelled due to an unexpected poor haze condition.
As our first assignment, we were to come up with a research topic/problem regarding the given themes: Future making, Social Design, and Design culture. The research problem has to have a relation to our field of specialization; This will aid our further studies and research in the future.
I have chosen New Media as my field of specialization for Creative Media and my initial research topic was about Artificial Intelligence (AI). My curiosity about the world has always been ambiguous and uncertain, especially when it comes to these world-changing machine learning systems, which have made a huge impact to all of our lives and the new generation of humanity. To connect the relation of robotics and AI into the design, I have formed a research problem as below:
It is always interesting to think about how the AI has remarkably changed our lives in today's world, but at the same time to realize that we humans are adapting and living our lives around our inventions.
Week 2 | Sep 6, 2019
To deepen my knowledge about these complex machine learning AI, I gave myself some time to do further research and studies on different perspective and definition of AI on different blogs. After understanding more of the topic of AI, I collected all the details and links of references on articles I've read through. I then refined my research topic problem into a more specific topic accordingly to the feedback from the previous class:
Week 3 | Sep 13, 2019
After realizing the complexity about the topic of robotics in design, I've switched over into user experience in packaging and mainly human-packaging interaction, the research topic is as below:
Week 4 | Sep 20, 2019
At this stage of the exercise, I was more than confused, I've read into different papers and articles regarding my topic, but things didn't seem to make much sense. So I eventually decided to make the last few changes to my topic of interest, which is the total user experience and human-centered design.
After going through come changes, I made a minor tweak to my research and came up with a new proposal.
After realizing my final choice in my field of specialization, the following is the final proposal. The research topic was tweaked to compliment my field of specialization. Additional information were also added, hence the increased research knowledge helped me understand more of the topic itself (This proposal is an updated version from a re submission window).
Dr. Jinchi have asked me to expand my research problem further and to address a specific problem. Rather than saying How Artificial Intelligence have changed designers, it was better to address in which ways have they changed us, our lifestyle? Product? Jobs? Narrow down the topic, then it becomes clearer to the audience.
Week 2 | Sep 6, 2019
It was a little disappointment to realize that the research topic I've came up with didn't connect as well to my upcoming years of specialization topic, that is New Media. Dr. Yati thoughtfully explained the reasons why I'll have to surrender the idea and to connect the topic of AI to new media; That could be UX/UI design. I'm truly glad to receive such advice and is ready to move on to the next research topic. Dr. Yati also strongly advised that I find reliable source of studies rather than reading blogs, this may include sources such as Google Scholar or the books in the library.
Week 3 | Sep 13, 2019
Narrow the topic down to what packaging. The packaging topic is much more practical to do research/appealing, it is easier than the UX on healthcare which is already in a different field of studies. The topic is leaning more towards medical than design because UX requires us to understand the topic first, this means a lot of studies and understandings towards the field of medical is required.
Week 4 | Sep 20, 2019
Relating to the previous attempt on the proposal, I still need to find more reliable resources through the library. Citation needs to be worked on. Make quick decisions on the topic, time is running out.
